Privacy Policy · Cheep

1. Introduction

Cheep is an app provided by Mehmet Ali Turushan Aktay (“we”, “us”, or “our”), who is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy applies to Cheep and its various versions and is part of our Terms of Use. This policy explains what data the app processes, why, and your choices. Cheep runs on your computer and sends us nothing: it has no account, no analytics and no servers of ours. Cheep shows no ads and does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.

We receive no data from Cheep. If you contact us, we receive only what you choose to send.

2. Who We Are

Cheep is developed and operated by Mehmet Ali Turushan Aktay, who is responsible for the processing described in this policy. Contact: turushande@gmail.com.

3. What Cheep Handles on Your Computer

Cheep runs on your computer as a command-line tool. It keeps its settings in a configuration file in your user account’s configuration folder (on a Mac, ~/Library/Application Support/cheep): for each profile, the Namecheap API user, username, whitelisted client IP address and environment. It keeps your Namecheap API key in your operating system’s credential manager (Keychain on macOS, Credential Manager on Windows and Secret Service on Linux), never in the configuration file. On servers it can read these values from environment variables instead.

Before every cheep dns apply or cheep dns restore, Cheep saves a snapshot of the zone it replaces, by default in a snapshots folder beside its configuration, so you can restore it. These snapshots hold your DNS records and stay on your computer until you delete them. DNS methods you call through cheep api save no snapshot. None of this leaves your computer through Cheep, except in the requests to Namecheap described below, and we never receive it.

4. The Internet Connections It Makes

Cheep connects only to Namecheap’s API: api.namecheap.com, or api.sandbox.namecheap.com for the sandbox. Each request carries your API user, API key, username and whitelisted client IP address, as Namecheap requires, with the details of the command you ran, such as the domains you check or the DNS records you set. Namecheap processes these under its own Privacy Policy. Cheep has no telemetry, no analytics and no update check, and it sends nothing to us.

Installing Cheep downloads it from GitHub: as a prebuilt archive from GitHub Releases, through Homebrew, or through your Go toolchain with go install, which may use the Go module mirror (proxy.golang.org, run by Google). Each works under its own terms.

5. This Website

This website is served by Cloudflare, which processes your IP address and request details to deliver pages and protect the site. This website, cheep.sh, counts page visits with Umami, a self-hosted analytics tool that runs on our own server in the EU (Helsinki, Finland). Umami sets no cookies, stores no IP address and builds no profile of you. It records the page you visit, the page that sent you there, your country, your browser and your device type. We share this data with no one and use it only to see which pages people read. We rely on our legitimate interest in knowing which pages are useful. The board on the home page makes no lookups. If you turn on the chirp sound, your browser remembers that choice in its local storage, on your device.

6. Security

Cheep keeps your API key in the operating system’s credential manager, never in its configuration file, and replaces your API key and the secret parameters it recognizes with [REDACTED] in its own output and error messages. Its requests to Namecheap use HTTPS. Changes need explicit flags, production changes also need --production, charges need --accept-charge, and cheep dns apply and cheep dns restore save a snapshot first.

7. Children’s Privacy

Cheep is a tool for software developers and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has shared personal data with us, contact us at turushande@gmail.com and we will help delete it.

8. International Transfers

Our providers process data in the United States and other countries. Where EU or UK law requires it, these transfers rely on the providers’ data protection terms, such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

9. Your Choices

Because we receive no data from Cheep, we have nothing to look up, correct or delete. Its data is yours: remove the API key from your operating system’s credential manager, delete the cheep configuration folder with its snapshots, or uninstall Cheep. For requests about data Namecheap, GitHub or Cloudflare processes, contact them directly; we can help you find the right place.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated version will be posted here with a revised “Last Updated” date. If a change is significant, we will announce it in the app or on this page before it takes effect, and ask for consent again where the law requires it.
